2017 Summer Camp Schedule

Hungry Monk Music Summer Camps are week long camps designed to immerse students into the world of music. Our teachers provide students with a variety of camps that cover a wide array of instruments, music styles, and activities. During the standard three hour camps, students participate in music classes taught by our skilled teachers, play games lead by our trained interns, get hands-on experience with new instruments, and observe talented musicians. 


SUMMER WORKSHOPS

 

Summer Sing with Hazel Ketchum

June 06, 13, 20 / 6pm-7:30pm / Taught by: Hazel Ketchum  //  All ages and skill levels welcome

Work on vocal technique, ensemble repertoire and harmonization. All ages welcome for this vocal exploration of a variety of musical styles.  

Tuition: $60 for all 3, $30 per drop-in class

 

Family Jam (NEW!)

June 24, 26, and 28 / 5:30pm-7pm / Taught by: Tom Noren  //  Ages 6+ / All skill levels welcome

Why should the kids have all the fun at Hungry Monk?  Join Tom for a guitar + any instrument with your son/daughter camp.  Beginners to advanced players welcome!  A great way to get you and your kids to practice and create everlasting memories.  Performance at the end of the camp.  

Tuition: $100 for 2 campers, Add $30 per additional camper


WEEK 1: JUNE 05 - 09

School of Rock 101

Mon-Fri / 9am-12pm / Taught by: John Holenko & Matt Masie  //  Ages 7-13 / Recommended for Beginners

Bring your instrument and get ready to plug in and rock out! Students will create their own band, learn new instruments, and experience playing on stage. All instruments are welcome. Drums and amps are provided.

Tuition: $175

 

Bass Guitar (NEW!)

Mon-Fri / 9am-12pm / Taught by: Jeremy Holenko  //  Ages 7-13 / All skill levels welcome

Students will learn the basics of technique and function of the bass in a band by playing in ensembles, receive coaching, private lessons and learning about amplification. Bring your own bass guitar or borrow an instrument from Hungry Monk Music (first come, first serve).

Tuition: $175

 

Jam Session Week (NEW!)

Mon-Fri / 12:30pm-3:30pm / Taught by: Cindy Kearney  //  Ages 12+ / Some experience recommended

Jam Camp is open to all instruments! The focus of this camp is to give students the tools to play with other musicians and to understand how your instrument fits into this scenario.  We’ll learn how to read lead sheets, touch on improvising, explore different styles of music, and generally have a great time playing music together!  Students should be familiar with at least two keys (Your teacher can help you with this, if you are unsure).

WEEK 2: JUNE 12 - 16

WoodSongs: Appalachia (NEW!)

Mon-Fri / 9am-12pm / Taught by: April Ballard & Hazel Ketchum  //  Ages 3-7 / All skill levels welcome

The WoodSongs Camp is based on the National Public Radio and PBS broadcast of the WoodSongs Old Time-Radio Hour, hosted by folk-singer Michael Johnathon. The WoodSongs camp will include an  introduction of bluegrass, folk,  jazz, and various musical genres and instruments with activities based upon the music. In the Appalachian music edition students will learn songs, dances and experience live music on banjo, guitar, fiddle and percussion! Each week of WoodSongs Camp will be different so students can take one camp or all three!

Guitar & Uke

Mon-Fri / 9am-12pm / Taught by: John Holenko & Bill Carson  //  Ages 7-13 / All skill levels welcome

Join two of Charlestons most popular guitarists and performers for a week of guitar and uke! This camp is for beginners to advanced. Players will learn everything from their first chords to improvised soloing. Ensemble playing will be a focus and students will be grouped according to level. All styles of music will be explored in this fun week of frets and strings.

WEEK 3: JUNE 19 - 23

Music for Young Children (Piano)

Mon-Fri / 9am-12pm / Taught by: Kumi Bergman  //  Ages 3-7 / All skill levels welcome

Open to beginners and current Music for Young Children students. Students will learn the nuts and bolts of music by story telling, singing, playing piano and rhythm instruments!

Tuition: $175

 

School of Rock 201

Mon-Fri / 9am-12pm / Taught by: John Holenko & Matt Masie  //  Ages 7-13 / Some experience recommended

For students who have some experience with their instruments and School of Rock 101 graduates! Bring your instrument and get ready to plug in and rock out even louder. All instruments are welcome. Drums and amps are provided.

WEEK 4: JUNE 26 - 30

Little Eurythmics

Mon-Fri / 9am-12pm / Taught by: Loretta Haskell  //  Ages 4-7 / All skill levels welcome

Students will engage in movement and singing games that will enhance their understanding of music as it relates to: spatial awareness, locomotor skills, use of materials and different instruments, cooperative learning and beginning ensemble skills, solo work, imagination, pitch matching and identification, and rhythmic, metric and expression symbols and their musical meanings.

WoodSongs: Low Country Arts (NEW!)

Mon-Fri / 9am-12pm / Taught by: April Ballard & Bill Carson  //  Ages 7-13 / All skill levels welcome

The WoodSongs Camp concept is based upon the National Public Radio and PBS broadcast of the WoodSongs Old Time-Radio Hour, hosted by folk-singer Michael Johnathon. In the Low Country Arts week Bill Carson will be playing guitar and banjo. Songs, stories and crafts from Low Country folk traditions will be the focus of this fun and lively week.

WEEK 5: JULY 10 - 14

Drum Circle

Mon-Fri / 9am-12pm / Taught by: Matt Masie & Jeremy Holenko  //  Ages 7-13 / All skill levels welcome

Students of all levels will interact with one another through the use of hand drums and percussion. Hand drums can be provided, or you can bring your own.

WEEK 6: JULY 17 - 21

Percussion Ensemble

Mon-Fri / 9am-12pm / Taught by: Matt Masie & Jeremy Holenko  //  Ages 9-15 / All skill levels welcome

Students will perform pieces in the style of the Blue Man Group and STOMP by drumming on buckets, garbage cans, and lots of pots and pans!

Tuition: $175 + $10 Materials Fee

 

STEAM: Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, & Math (NEW!)

Mon-Fri / 9am-12pm / Taught by: Tom Noren  //  Ages 7-14 / All skill levels welcome

Foster your child’s love of discovery with an interactive, hands-on and engaging experience. Create, build and invent with 21st century technologies such as LittleBits, Sphero, Ozobots and MaKey MaKey. Connect with technology, art and design!

WEEK 7: JULY 24 - 28

American/Irish Fiddle Club (NEW!)

Mon-Fri / 9am-12pm / Taught by: Ellie Jos & Bob Culver  //  Ages 7-13 / Some experience recommended

Open to string students with one year experience and accompanying instruments such as guitar, banjo, mandolin, and piano. Students will learn traditional tunes, receive one-on-one coaching, and perform together in ensembles.

WEEK 8: JULY 31 - AUGUST 04

Instrument Building for Kids (NEW!)

Mon-Fri / 9am-12pm / Taught by: Bob Culver  //  Ages 7-13 / All skill levels welcome

Students will learn how to build simple musical instruments -- guitars, drums, horns, and the infamous "canjo".  At the end of the week everyone will play their instrument in the camp band.   

Tuition: $175 + $15 Materials Fee

 

WoodSongs: String Week (NEW!)

Mon-Fri / 9am-12pm / Taught by: April Ballard & Ellie Jos  //  Ages 3-7 / All skill levels welcome

The WoodSongs Camp concept is based upon the National Public Radio and PBS broadcast of the WoodSongs Old Time-Radio Hour, hosted by folk-singer Michael Johnathon.  In the Wood Songs String week students will focus on American/Irish traditions of violin, viola, cello and bass playing.  This is a great introduction to the world of strings and a complimentary camp with the Instrument Building Camp.
